There are multiple ways to link to other sites and to receive links from sites to your site. These forms are currently very popular:

• One way link: you link to a site, or a site links to you.
• Reciprocal link exchage: you link to a site, and the site links back to you. This way you can help each other, so webmasters may be more likely to help you.
• Articles: you can ask someone to write an article about your website and link to your site. This may not always be a free service, but the links can be very strong and helpful.

Here is a list of guidelines that you should follow when setting up link exchanges (the list is never complete)

• Make sure that you only set up link exchanges with quality websites, meaning websites that have content and not just links to other websites or advertisements.
• Be careful with excessive link exchanges: keep in mind that the number of links to website is not the most important factor; quality of the links is even more important.
• Exchange links with websites that have a good PageRank (rank high on search engines). Websites that have a higher PageRank than your website may be able to pull your site up.
• Ask be placed in a good position (maybe even on the homepage, if possible).
• Link to websites with similar content. That way you also become a useful link to similar websites (why would a website with medical products link to a real estate agent?).
• When exchanging links, mention which title and description you would like the other person to use when linking back to your website. If you sell car parts in Montreal, you may want to use car parts reseller in Montreal as a clickable title. If you are consistent in using the same title and description, search engines may start picking up your website for those keywords.
